Located at the very eastern part of the Dominican Republic island, in the province of La Altagracia, Punta Cana is a seaside resort renowned for its huge white sandy beaches and bustling night-life. For close to half a century now, it has been welcoming large numbers of holiday-makers who come to relax in the Ocean's turquoise waters. Its reputation and popularity truly boosted the province's activity, now generously adorned with large resorts and an international airport. Yet its breath-taking landscapes still offer a complete change of scenery, creating the perfect trip.

Punta Cana: combining comfort and exoticism

As a highly-acclaimed holiday destination, Punta Cana's main attraction is of course its 10 km² of coastline and beaches, huge stretches of sand lined with coconut palms, facing the Atlantic's blue waters. The island's tropical island boasts stable temperatures, generally ranging from 25°C to 35°C. Acting as perfect hosts, the resort's hotel services always have fun activities available, in addition to the simple pleasure of lazing on the beach and going for dips in the sea.

Some activities are quite original. As such, the Manati Park is a water park where visitors can swim with dolphins! Another attraction of the same kind is the Marinarium, where diving courses are organised with some of the park's residents: nurse sharks and rays. What a thrilling experience!

The festivities carry on long after sunset. Night-life is much more alive in Punta Cana than on the rest of the island. Until late into the night, the heart of the city beats to the rhythm of bachata and merengue, two dance styles typical of the Caribbean, played by all the night clubs.

There are also lots of places to see inland; an excursion will take you to the heart of the mountains and of the tropical forest adorned with wild flowers. When walking along certain tracks, hikers can find small cenotes - huge sinkholes filled with a mixture of sea and clear water where visitors can enjoy a lovely swim. The one in Hoyo Azul is particularly spectacular. Travelling a little further to the coastal town of Bayahibe, the most adventurous among you can embark on a boat trip around Saona island - the pearl of all Dominican islands.

It would indeed be a shame to snob the rest of the island during your trip to Punta Cana. This small Caribbean Republic is highly attractive and is waiting to be discovered. The capital, Santo Domingo, is one of the oldest towns, founded by the Europeans when they came to the New World. It has many museums and classified monuments that bear testimony to the country's rich past. The town of Santiago is renowned for its cigar factories.
